【Event recap】micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition 2025-26

The high-octane STEAM event, the micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition, concluded with great success on May 9th! This thrilling event brought together many upper primary and junior secondary students. By hands-on cutting, sanding, and decorating their own rocket cars powered by real black powder, participants experienced the speed and rush of tens of kilometers per hour—perfectly fusing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to inspire limitless creative thinking.

Special thanks to our co-organizing school, Tack Ching Girls' Secondary School, for providing the excellent venue, and to Principal Ms. Chong, Ka-Lo and Vice Principal Mr. Chan, Kam-kong for serving as our guest of honor for the awards presentation, bringing this exciting competition to a wonderful close!

🏎️ Three Main Competition Tasks

Task 1 On-site Rocket Car Manufacturing

The atmosphere at the venue was charged with excitement and tension as students fully immersed themselves in the challenge! Within a high-stakes 90-minute limit, participants raced against the clock, skillfully using the tools provided by Trumptech to craft their very own custom rocket cars from scratch. Watching their unique designs come to life was a true testament to their intense focus, hands-on STEAM skills, and dedication!

Task 2 Vehicle Scrutineering & Inspection

On the day of the competition, all participating rocket cars had to undergo rigorous specification checks. The students' nervous anticipation was palpable as judges meticulously inspected every single creation. Any vehicle failing to meet the required standards faced disqualification—a strict rule that served as their very first lesson in the paramount engineering principles of precision and safety.

Task 3 Solid-Fuel Rocket Launch Track Race

An exhilarating live launch moment! The model rocket cars were securely locked onto the steel track wires, loaded with real gunpowder, and blasted off instantly via electronic ignition. High-precision micro:bit infrared timing gates were installed at the end of the track to accurately measure the cars' peak speeds within a 1-meter speed-check zone. The moment the rocket cars launched, the entire crowd erupted in cheers, creating a thrilling and high-energy atmosphere!

🏆 Awards

Speed Award (Champion, 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up): Ranked strictly by top velocity recorded by micro:bit timing gates.
Best School Performance Award: Evaluated based on overall team discipline, collaborative sportsmanship, venue presentation, and safety awareness.
Best Design Award: Judged across five dimensions: **Color Harmony**, **Body Aerodynamics & Shape**, **Component Aesthetics**, **Structural Functionality**, and **Creative Innovation**.
